Privacy Policy

Aether Labs ("WasteSplit," "we," "us," or "our") respects your privacy and is strongly committed to keeping secure any information we obtain from you or about you. This Privacy Policy describes how we collect, use, disclose, and safeguard your information when you access or use the WasteSplit mobile application (iOS and Android) and related services (collectively, the "Service").

Please read this Privacy Policy carefully. By accessing or using the Service, you acknowledge that you have read, understood, and agree to be bound by this Privacy Policy. If you have questions about this Privacy Policy or our data practices, please contact us at legal@wastesplit.com.

1. Information We Collect

We collect information to provide, improve, and personalize our Services. The types of information we collect depend on how you interact with our Service.

1.1 Information You Provide

Account Information. When you create an account, we collect your email address, full name, and password (stored securely using industry-standard hashing). If you sign in using Google, we receive your name, email address, and profile picture URL from Google. We do not receive or store your Google password.

User Content. When you use our classification features, we collect photos of items you upload for classification and your classification history (items you've scanned and their results).

Feedback. When you provide feedback about our Service—such as reporting classification errors or submitting suggestions—we collect the feedback content along with related context (such as the classification you're commenting on).

Location Information. With your consent, we may collect your city, state, postal code, and precise location coordinates to help find nearby disposal facilities. You can use WasteSplit without providing location data, though some features like facility recommendations will be limited.

1.2 Information Collected Automatically

Technical Information. When you use our Service, we automatically collect your IP address, device type and operating system, app version, and image metadata (dimensions, file size, format).

Usage Information. We collect information about how you use the Service, including the types of content you classify, features you access, classification requests, alternatives you view, and login activity.

1.3 Information We May Receive from Other Sources

We may receive information from third-party partners, such as security providers, to help protect against fraud, abuse, and other security threats to our Services.

1.4 Information We Do NOT Collect

We do not collect device identifiers (UDID, IDFA), contacts or address book data, biometric data, or browsing history outside the app. EXIF data from photos is automatically stripped before processing.

2. How We Use Your Information

We use the information we collect for the purposes described below.

To Provide Our Services. We use your information to process your waste classification requests, display your classification history, recommend nearby disposal facilities based on your location, and authenticate your identity.

To Improve Our Services. We may process your data in an aggregated or de-identified form for the purposes of analyzing the effectiveness of our Services, conducting research, analyzing user behavior, and training classification models. We do so under your authorization when you use the Service, and without reference to you when our purpose is to train our models for accuracy and safety purposes.

To Communicate With You. We use your information to respond to your feedback and support requests, and to send service-related notifications (such as updates to our Terms or Privacy Policy). We do not send marketing emails without your explicit consent.

To Ensure Safety and Security. We use your information to protect against fraud, abuse, and security threats, and to enforce our Terms of Service.

To Comply With Law. We may use your information to comply with applicable laws and regulations, respond to lawful requests from authorities, and protect our legal rights.

3. Disclosure of Personal Data

We disclose personal data only in the circumstances described below.

Service Providers. We share data with trusted third-party service providers who help us operate the Service, including cloud hosting and infrastructure, AI classification processing, mapping and location services, and authentication providers. All service providers are contractually bound to protect your data and use it only for the purposes we specify.

Affiliates. We may share information with our affiliates and subsidiaries for purposes consistent with this Privacy Policy.

Legal Requirements. We may disclose your information if required to comply with a legal obligation, court order, or government request; protect the safety of any person; protect against legal liability; or investigate potential violations of our Terms of Service.

Business Transfers. If we are involved in a merger, acquisition, or sale of assets, your information may be transferred. We will notify you before your information becomes subject to a different privacy policy.

With Your Consent. We may share your information with third parties when you direct us to do so or provide explicit consent.

What We Do NOT Do. We do not sell your personal information. We do not share your data with advertisers. We do not share identifiable photos with third parties except for AI processing as described above.

4. Data Retention

We retain your personal data for as long as reasonably necessary to provide our Services and fulfill the purposes described in this Privacy Policy. When personal data is no longer required, we will delete it or convert it into an anonymous form.

Account Deletion. If you delete your account, we will delete or de-identify your personal data within 30 days, except where we are required to retain it for legal, compliance, or safety purposes.

De-Identified Information. We may de-identify your data by removing personal identifiers. De-identified information is no longer personal data and may be retained indefinitely to improve our Services and train our classification models.

5. Your Rights

You can exercise control over your personal data through the Service. For requests that cannot be completed in the app, contact us at legal@wastesplit.com.

We cannot guarantee the factual accuracy of AI-generated classifications. If a classification is inaccurate, use the feedback feature to report it.

After we receive your request, we may verify your identity. We will not discriminate against you for exercising your rights.

6. Security

We implement reasonable security measures designed to protect your personal data from unauthorized access, alteration, disclosure, or destruction. However, no method of transmission over the internet or electronic storage is completely secure, and we cannot guarantee absolute security.

If you discover a security vulnerability, please report it to security@wastesplit.com.

7. Children

The Service is not directed to children under 18. We do not knowingly collect personal data from children under 18. If you are a parent or guardian and believe your child has provided us with personal data, please contact us at legal@wastesplit.com and we will investigate and delete it as appropriate.

8. Changes to This Policy

We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you by email or through the Service before the changes take effect. Your continued use of the Service after any changes constitutes your acceptance of the updated policy.

9. Additional U.S. State Disclosures
